Dahrl ThomsonFinding expression through stone carving, my objective is to create totally original sculpture which resonates with the viewer "soul to soul." For me abstraction can be more powerful than realism, therefore I carve images that convey a familiar idea in an unfamiliar way. Sculpting stone is my passion. I choose stone for the following reasons: it represents eons of time, change, travel, and history, symbolizing a bridge between past and present; it is the metaphoric bones of Mother Earth; it has permanence, strength, beauty, and sometimes translucence; every stone is different-and I love that! I also love the hard, physical work of carving rock-although a fairly slow process-it is very satisfying and a source of constant discovery. Sometimes these stone originals are "cast" into bronze or stainless steel, giving the original work a new interpretation that may be a "high- tech look" or a different color and/or finish. Most of all, I cannot imagine life without art-without the joy and pain of creating-and searching for solutions that seem never completely unveiled. Art is as basic to my life as breath-and sculpture is the means with which to truly breathe!
