The Migres Foundation is a non-profit/ non-government organization created
in 2003 and located in Tarifa, Spain. The aim and mission of Migres is the
study of bird migration through the Strait of Gibraltar. A phenomenal number
of birds migrate from all over Europe, funnel to the tip of Spain and wait for
the right winds to cross the ten mile strip of ocean (the Strait of Gibraltar)
to reach Africa. A reverse direction migration occurs from Africa across
the Strait of Gibraltar in the spring. In 1997, The Migres program
started and continues a long-term study program for the scientific monitoring
of migratory birds in the Strait of Gibraltar to measure the effects of climate
change in bird populations. The Migres program is based on systematic and
standardized counting which provide comparable results year after year. Migres
actively contributes to the public awareness and education of bird habitat and
conservation.
