The Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network was established in 1988 to rescue and rehabilitate injured, orphaned, or oiled wild birds and small mammals. The non-profit organization operates under permits (pdf file) from the California Department of Fish and Game and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Some 3,000 wild animals are treated by the Network each year and more than half are successfully rehabilitated and released. The Network operates a care center at 819 Garden Street in Santa Barbara. Small birds are cared for at this location while other animals are treated at the homes of several volunteers. Many of these animals are brought to the Network from veterinarian offices or city and county agencies, such as Animal Control and Harbor Patrol. Most come from the public via the Network's telephone Helpline (805-966-9005). Volunteers are dispatched to rescue or retrieve injured wildlife based on tips from the public.
