David Derrick has a profound interest in the conservation of the natural world - especially gorillas, which goes beyond mere statements of support to include considerable personal effort and expense. His artwork is the main method of support. David is a professional artist, passionate about the creatures he portrays and was attracted to AFC because of its mission and by many of its members. The United Nations selected him to help raise money for wild gorillas in their Year of the Gorilla Campaign. He donated paintings, sculptures, his books and time They sold large sculptures, original plein air ink paintings and around 100 copies of his book "African Diaries." David was present at their symposium in Frankfurt where he found himself at a long conference table in Frankfurt Germany sitting amongst politicians (African & European), primatologists, conservationists, eco-tourism entrepreneurs and zoo directors. All had convened for the same purpose; to put into writing how to protect gorillas through eco-tourism. David reflected:"Our work would be part of a larger declaration on gorilla conservation. In the meeting we all debated, rather intensely at times on the proper grammar and wording for our portion of the declaration. There were several other groups in separate conference rooms debating the semantics of other gorilla related issues: logging/mining, armed conflict, diseases, and hunting. Once completed every section was combined to form the Frankfurt Declaration on Gorilla Conservation." More information on this can be found at http://www.yog2009.org/FFM_Gorilla_Symposium/Frankfurt_Declaration_16%20June.pdf . David has been promoting conservation through his artwork on his own at an extraordinary level - traveling to Germany to sell art for conservation, hosting Ian Redmond at DreamWorks, and participating in several auctions and fundraisers. The artwork of David Derrick is unique due to his experience in the film and animation industry. To animate literally means to give life. David conveys movement and life in his pieces through strong poses and powerful gestures. When preparing a sculpture David spends hours observing and sketching his subject matter. Heavily influenced by great animalier sculptors Rembrant Bugatti, and Antoine Louis Barye, David adds his own unique style and perspective thanks to his extensive experience as an artist in the animation industry. Once completed David's sculptures are cast and bronzed using the lost wax method. Besides sculpting David has worked as an artist in the animation industry, primarily at DreamWorks Feature Animation. He is also a published author/illustrator. Prior to his career as an artist David studied fine art at the University of Utah and furthered his education at California Institute of the Arts (CALARTS). As a student, his films were very successful garnering many awards including a student Emmy Award. David lives and works in California, USA.
