Bridget Grady

Bridget Eileen Grady is an American artist whose painting is poetically influenced by her explorations of the woods and fields of New England, the literature of natural history, and a childhood shaped by life on a neighboring farm. Her primary body of work investigates and depicts sensitive ecological environments both figuratively and abstractly. The work focuses on the connection of the psyche to nature and the translation of that experience through the perceptual process of painting. She believes that it is cultural attitudes that have the greatest impact on the condition of the environment. Artists perform a social function by producing visual artefacts that can have an effect on the attitudes of a society toward the natural world. This point of view has a long tradition in the history of landscape painting and continues to be relevant considering the current critical state of the environment.

Bridget's support for conservation as an artist takes various forms. She donates to or participates in events held by conservation groups on a regular basis. A portion of many of her artwork sales is donated to nature based charities. Currently she creates projects and exhibitions to raise awareness on critical environmental issues. Since returning to the United States from Singapore in 2011, she has re-opened her studio where she teaches and holds events in her "Field Projects" exhibition space. Her teaching of youth is infused with the practice of observing nature and an interdisciplinary perspective in combining art practice and an appreciation of the natural sciences.

The "Crop Circle" exhibition that was held in 2011 was a collaborative research project that engaged artists, farmers, and the local community in an effort to raise awareness of local food systems and organic farming practices. It was a continuation of her work in Singapore that was focused on the intersection of food, culture, and the environment. The exhibition of invited artists and the local community served to bring the project to full circle with partial proceeds being donated to the local food bank.

Currently her Blue Horse Arts Studio is working in conjunction with the Flanders Nature Center and Land Trust by hosting an international call for art titled "Plight of the Pollinators" to raise awareness on the importance of the role of pollinators on our food supply. 50% of the proceeds of entry fees and sales will be donated to Flanders Nature Center's environmental education programming. For more information the Plight of the Pollinators: Call to Artists visit the websites www.bluehorsearts.com or www.flandersnaturecenter.org. Artists can also directly apply through https://www.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php?ID=949 .

Ms. Grady is an award winning exhibitor both nationally and internationally. Most recently her work was selected for exhibition at the Connecticut Department of Energy& Environmental Protection by Commissioner Daniel C. Esty, 2012, the “International Drawing Annual 7,Sponsored by the Manifest Creative Research Center,2012,  “The Art of Conservation 2010, An International Exhibit of Nature in Art” sponsored by the Artists for Conservation Foundation and  she was an exhibiting finalist in the Natural Resources Defense Council’s Environmental Art Prize 2010.

Ms. Grady’s projects also include traditional and digital works created in Southeast Asia where she was an assistant professor of art at Nanyang Technological University, School of Art, Design, and Media located in Singapore. These works investigate the complex issues surrounding the material culture of developing nations and their effect on the environment. Work from this series “Glut” was selected for inclusion in the International Painting Annual, Exhibition in Print, published in 2011,and sponsored by Manifest Creative Research Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
