Art Celebrates Birds
October 2006
Pegasus Gallery Hosts

Pegasus Gallery Hosts internationally known bird and wildlife painter Jon Janosik will exhibit his most recent body of work at Pegasus Gallery throughout the month of October. He will be joined by John Byrne and Frances Stilwell in the upcoming show, Art Celebrates Birds. Janosik has been a professional painter for the last 40 years working in oil, acrylic and watercolor. His concentration is on portraits birds of the world in nature, uniquely combining the landscape and the bird within each artwork. His early professional experience as an illustrator gives him special insight into the biology, movement, and life history of wild birds.
Jon is well known to Corvallis Audubon as the creator of our masthead for the Chat and also his participation for many years in the Christmas Bird Count. After fifteen years of living elsewhere Jon was re-introduced to Corvallis Audubon in the "fireside chat" hosted by Sue Haig in April 2006. His credentials are so numerous, not even the most interesting accomplishments would not fit into a single article. He was never formally educated in art but benefited greatly from contacts with the great bird painters Don Eckelberry and Roger Tory Peterson, with whom he went on bird walks as a teen-ager. While on a full scholarship in Zoology at Oberlin College he supplemented his income by illustrating biology texts for Warren Walker, a professor at Oberlin. He has shown at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institute, British Museum of Natural History and Kobe Museum of Natural History in Japan.
His interest in recent years has been cranes from around the world. At Pegasus he will show paintings of many bird species as well as his beloved cranes. "My aim in painting has always been the most exact transcription possible of my most intimate sensations of birds in nature. I have tried to present my impressions in what is the most congenial and expressive form achievable from me. I have elected to study birds with brush and paint, attempting to force this often-unwilling medium of paint, to record their life and beauty." Other regional painters and photographers will join Janosik in the exhibit including John Byrne and Frances Stilwell.
Former OSU Oceanographer John Byrne is appreciated for his efforts at protecting the gray whale and other whale species while he represented the United States on the International Whaling Commission. He is also known for his work as Administrator of NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) in Washington D.C. He returned to Corvallis in 1984 to serve as President of Oregon State University for eleven years. John paints in acrylics the birds he and his wife Shirley see on their trips around the globe. He had his first show of bird paintings this summer as the guest artist at the Art in the Valley Gallery in Corvallis.
Frances Stilwell ventures into the bird-painting world primarily with Oregon birds in their typical habitats. Her oil paintings reflect a re-emerging emphasis in animal behavior (ethnology), one of her former professional interests. She wrote and illustrated the book Come Walk through Spring with Bessie Gragg Murphy and her Willamette Valley Wildflowers, which was selected as one of the top ten books reviewed by the Salem Statesman Journal in 2002.
The Art Celebrates Birds exhibit will be up through the month of October 2006. Pegasus Gallery will host a reception to meet the artists and the artwork on Friday, October 20th, from 6:30-9pm at Pegasus 341 SW 2nd Street, Corvallis, Oregon 97333. Janosik will be featured on Oregon Art Beat on OPB sometime in October For more information please call Bill or Paige @ (541)757-0042 go to www.pegasusartgallery.com (Gallery hours are T-S 10:3-5:3) Let your love of birds pique your curiosity, and we will see you there
