Montpelier artist Douglas Aja receives high award in national fine art exhibition.
New York, November 16 – The American Artists Professional League (AAPL) Has announced Douglas Aja of Montpelier, Vermont as the 2014 recipient of the “Frank C. Wright medal of Honor Award” at the AAPL 86th Grand National Exhibition. The award was presented by AAPL President Peter Rossi on Sunday, November 16, 2014 during the AAPL annual meeting and awards reception held at the Salmagundi Club in New York City.
Mr Aja received one of AAPL's most prestigious awards for his sculpture entitled “Mourning Erin” which was chosen from 29 works in the sculpture category.
“The AAPL is dedicated to encouraging and promoting traditional, realistic art,” said Peter Rossi. “We are extremely proud to recognize some of America's finest artists, and our award winner's work epitomizes the quality of art that our organization strives to support.”
These elephants depicted in “Mourning Erin” are part of Cynthia Moss' study group in Amboseli National Park. The skull belongs to Erin, who died as the result of being speared. Erin's mother Echo has her trunk wrapped around the skull while her young calf Email approaches from the side. Aja donated the $500 prize money to Amboseli Trust for Elephants.
