Pollyanna Pickering and Brian May team up to support Badgers
Pollyanna is delighted to have joined forces with legendary guitarist Brian May and West End singer Kerry Ellis in a new venture to help raise funds for the vaccination of badgers.
One of the founding members of rock group Queen, Dr Brian May is frequently cited as one of the worlds greatest guitarists. He holds a PhD in astrophysics and runs his own animal welfare organisation called Save Me. In recent years he has become one of the most outspoken and passionate campaigners for badgers, opposing the UK governments controversial cull.
Pollyanna has created a new painting of badgers live on television, which will be exhibited at her forthcoming Christmas exhibition in her private gallery. The painting which is called ‘Safe Haven’ will also be released as a limited edition print – and Brian and his frequent collaborator singer Kerry Ellis have co-signed the first 10 prints with Pollyanna. This is only the second time that Pollyanna has released any co-signed images (the first being with the Duchess of Devonshire as part of a project to raise funds for medical charity Nedscan). Pollyanna will also complete a ‘remarque’ – an original pencil sketch on the mount of each of the ten. These pictures are sure to become much sought after collectors items. Funds from sales of the limited edition will be donated to projects which are vaccinating the wild badger population against TB.
Both Pollyanna and Brian are united in backing vaccination of badgers as an alternative to culling as a method of controlling TB. The pilot badger culls which took place last year were condemned as ‘a cruel failure’ by the independent scientific review ordered by government ministers. Dominic Dyer, chief executive of the Badger Trust, of which Pollyanna is patron, claimed the “disastrous” six-week pilots had cost £10million – or £4,000 per badger, while Brian May estimates that badgers could be humanely vaccinated for “about £120 a head”.
