On August 6th, 2012, six artists began a canoe trip at the headwaters of the Noatak River in Gates of the Arctic National Park. Four weeks later they finished the 459-mile length of the river and crossed the Chukchi Sea to Kotzebue. Linda Besse was one of those artists on this extreme wilderness adventure completely above the Arctic Circle and which had no resupply stations. One of her goals was to see musk ox in the wild..and she did. This trip was through the Wilderness River Expedition Art Foundation founded and led by Rob Mullen. WREAF is now the expedition arm of the Center for Circumpolar Studies which is allied with the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History.
