Director of RSPB NI opens AFC artist's solo exhibition
Director of RSPB Northern Ireland opens ‘A Glimpse of Nature’ Exhibition

On the 22 March, the Director of RSPB Northern Ireland, Dr James Robinson, will be opening, ‘Glimpse of Nature’ exhibition by wildlife Artist Lorna Hamilton at Castle Espie Gallery, Ireland’s only environmental art space. Lorna Hamilton is a name you may be familiar with from the TV programme, BBC Wild Week Live. Lorna who was the resident artist at Castle Espie during the show will be returning to the gallery with a new exhibition of wildlife art.

Lorna has been a professional artist for over 16 years graduating from the University of Ulster in 1995 with BA (Hons) in Fine Art. Following a successful period of painting portraits Lorna decided to follow her passion for wildlife in 2005. Two years later her work was recognised by two worldwide organisations based in the United States showcasing the very best wildlife artists in the world. Lorna was accepted into both organisations, Artists for Conservation and the Society of Animal Artists of which she is the only Irish member.

Dr. James Robinson says, ‘Lorna’s paintings really capture the beauty and extraordinary behaviour of our precious wildlife. I’ve known Lorna for some time and her passion for nature and ability to capture it so well in her painting is a great inspiration to me. In her exhibition of new work, she is really stepping up for nature by bringing people closer to nature through her wonderful art. I’m absolutely delighted to help Lorna launch her exhibition and I hope lots of people will come along to enjoy her pictures.’

This is truly a unique opportunity to see, ‘Glimpse of Nature’ as Lorna only exhibits through solo shows and specialist wildlife exhibitions and her next exhibition will not be showcased until 2013. Visitors will have the chance to meet the artist and witness a full year of Lorna’s artistic abilities including paintings in oils and coloured pencil. The show will focus on Irish wildlife, both birds and mammals. Favourites such as Sparrows, Heron, Wren, Puffin, Fox and Otter will feature along with birds in some both familiar and unusual settings. The exhibition will include 24 paintings, with varying price.

Lorna highlights, ‘I am delighted to be back at Castle Espie again with completely new paintings. My last show in 2010 was extremely well received and I am looking forward to meeting everyone who comes to see my exhibition.’ Following the exhibition, Lorna will be holding a demonstration day on Saturday 5th May, when she will share some lessons and secrets on using oils and coloured pencils. She will be giving further details of this event during her show.

Castle Espie Wetland Centre is open daily from 10am. Access to the car park, visitor centre, shop, Loughshore Café and the Art Gallery is free of charge. The centre is accessible for wheelchairs. Normal admission prices apply to the reserve. For further information on this exhibition, forthcoming events, conservation campaigns please call 028 9187 4146 or visit wwt.org.uk/castleespie.
