Initially my first life size sea turtle sculpture was going to be two sea turtles as they were swimming in the waves. Then came Tropical Storm Claudette, Hurricane Gustav and other storms drowning many sea turtle nest eggs in 2009 followed by the Gulf Oil Spill in 2010. My focus changed to the environmental degradation of the sea turtle species. Instead of sea turtles dancing in the waves my clay model sculptures are on a beach that is encroached on by an oil spill. There is a mother Loggerhead Sea Turtle. All seven threatened and endangered sea turtle hatchlings are represented along with a nest and eggs.
As I develop the outer "oil" area I plan on incorporating vague images of a gull, dolphin and ghost crab and/or other ocean wildlife that are also being destroyed. Tire tracks driving directly over a marked sea turtle nest are part of the set scene.
The sculpture will be on a wood base with cast glass sea turtles/eggs/nest and a kiln formed glass depiction of the surrounding oil.
This sculpture will be finished in June 2017. Multiple artists and others have contributed their time and exceptional talents so that this sculpture can go out into the world to educate about the perils facing sea turtles.
A percent of all sales will go to Alligator Point Sea Turtle Patrol and other turtle/marine related agencies from the selling of my sea turtle art work.
