Drakensberg
Our trip started at Sungabala , a remote bush camp situated in the Drakensberd Ranges on the border of South Africa and Lesotho, is an amazing place, ranging in height from 2,000 to 3600 meters It's wildlife at this height consists of small rodents like the Rock Hyrax locally known as (Dassie) which is related to the African Elephant, a small animal around 400mm long living in this rocky terrian moving along vertical formations of rock with ease. These are wonderful animals to sit and watch. You could sit and watch them for hours if you had the time. Rock climbing became the name of the game on the first day, ascending to a 3000 meter escarpment via a 120 meter vertical chain ladder. Our camp which was still 2 hours walk away, being set up near Tegula Falls, this, being the second highest waterfall in the world, a little over 700 metres high. Black Backed Jackals ventured near our camp on day 2. These animals, found only in National Parks, are now rarely seen in areas like the Drackensber., We were excited to see these lovely animals so close. Antelope appear on the hill side near camp. Unlike National Parks in Africa, we were not confined to sitting in cars, this was a wilderness experience getting close to nature and feeling its heart beat. Birds appeared, and these were not just ordinary birds, Cape Vultures- one of South Africa rarest birds, dozens of them flying in the thermals above us, what a sight, baboons grunting on our right hand side, one baboon jumped from a ledge i thought, to it death with a 800 meter drop in front it. Each day went by with new and more wonderful experiences |
