Audubon Artists Cleo Hartwig Award
One of the most prestigious art organizations in the United States, Audubon Artists Incorporated is an organization devoted to promoting the paintings, sculpture and graphics of American artists working in all styles of expression. Their annual exhibitions are held at the Salmagundi Art Club, 47 Fifth Avenue, New York, New York. Cleo Hartwig (1907 - 1988) sculpted from the late 1930s until her death in New York City at age 80. Hartwig was a direct carver who created many animal sculptures in wood and stone. She was said to have the ability to release the spirit captured within the wood or stone. In this respect, she had an affinity for Inuit sculptors methods and often spoke of how they began a sculpture by holding the stone to their ear and asking, "What's inside?". Her sculpture is found in museums across the United States.
