In May of 2012, I travelled to Uzbekistan with a group from the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, NM. In addition to small villages in the Fergana Valley and the major cities of the ancient Silk Road - Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva and Tashkent - we visited Nukus, the location of the wonderful museum housing not only cultural artifacts from the area but also an incredible collection of Modern Art from the former Soviet Union which was banned and hidden during the Stalin regime (see the excellent film, "The Desert of Forbidden Art"). I photographed the ancient landscapes, textiles and peoples of this land with the intention of creating painting and photography shows on my return, in order to bring attention to the culture and land and its preservation, and hopefully benefiting it in some way. I will have a show of paintings from this trip in the summer of 2014, at the Base Camp Coffeehouse in Sister Bay, WI. Please see the "Events Page" of this website for further details. Previous and ongoing similar projects include Thailand, Indonesia and Guatemala.
