I am primarily a self-taught watercolor artist. I've read nearly every "how-to" watercolor book on the market and my painting style is a combination of techniques learned from numerous watercolor artists. My watercolor method has been influenced by workshops with Andrew Denman, Joe Garcia and Adele Earnshaw, and books by Nita Engle, Donald Patterson, Susan Harrison-Tustin and Susan Bourdet to name a few.
I use multiple glazes and realistic drybrush techniques to capture the essence of an animal and its habitat. My paintings may have more than 20 layers and glazes of color in specific areas to acheive the luminous quality I am looking for. I pay meticulous attention to detail and study live birds and animals, photographs and taxidermy mounts to ensure anatomical accuracy in my paintings. I don’t want to simply depict an animal, I want the viewer to feel the texture of feathers and fur. I want to recreate the sense of wonder that I experience when I come upon an animal in its natural environment.
I have greatly admired and studied the paintings of Robert Bateman, Carl Brenders, Bob Kuhn, Terry Isaac, Paco Young, John Seerey-Lester and Mort Solberg for many years and while many of them paint in different media, I try to imagine how to translate the beautiful effects they achieve into watercolor--a truly challenging medium.
