AFC was saddened to learn that Herb passed away during the summer of 2016. We do, however, celebrate Herb's artwork as well as his life.

"I remember one evening, standing on the deck of my house at sunset I heard an unusual sound. It was faint at first and grew steadily louder. From the east, hundreds of geese, flying at tree-top level came directly over head. One of the formations was flying in the valley just below the deck. It was impressive. This is the kind of happening that inspires me."

The house in question was Herb Simeone's first studio in the mountains of north Idaho, four miles north of the "end-of-the-road" town of Elk River. For Simeone, the road to Elk River started in Brooklyn, New York, his birthplace, and wound through countless U.S. towns and cities during his five years as an air force pilot. It was in 1972, after his separation from the service, that he decided to settle his family in Idaho. "The fifteen years in Idaho nurtured my love of wildlife and sharpened my powers of observation."

In 1989, Simeone moved to Switzerland where he lived and painted until 1992. He returned to Southeast Asia that year and, tapping his skills as a chef, he opened a small Italian restaurant in Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital. After his departure some eight months later, a new restaurant, Happy Herb's Pizza, owned and operated by Simeone's Cambodian proteges, opened its doors in Phnom Penh. He counts many of the Cambodians he met there amongst his dearest friends: one of his later art shows featured his remembrances of Cambodia. "My wish is to portray the beauty and gentleness of these wonderful people."

Simeone obtained a degree in mathematics from New York University in 1964. He currently resides in East Hampton, New York and Elk River, Idaho. He is co-founder of the Elk Falls Committee, which prevailed to defeat a plan to harness the flow of the beautiful Elk Creek Falls in Idaho, and regularly donates prints of his works to not-for-profit wildlife organizations (e.g World Center for Birds of Prey, Boise, Idaho, Wildlife Rescue Center of the Hamptons, Hampton Bays, New York, Wildlife Natural Care Center, B.C., Canada. Wild Bird Rescue, Wichita Falls, Texas). In 1997, two of his paintings were selected by Bonhams International for the "Art of the Living World" auction held in Singapore. He works in several media and paints wildlife and portraits.
