Heidi Uotila, whose parents immigrated to the United States from Finland, attended The Ohio State University and graduated with a BFA.
Heidi sculpted her first bronzes, an elk and white rhino, from life. Upon completion of these two bronzes in 1980, she was accepted into the prestigious Society of Animal Artists.
Heidi continued to sculpt, creating only originals from stoneware clay. The originals are all hand sculpted from high fire stoneware. No molds are used. After thoroughly drying the sculpture is fired to 2261 degrees. Then each animal is meticulously painted with artist's oil paints. Any animal can be created by special order.
Heidi's pursuit for realism has taken her from the Alaska wilderness to zoos across the country. She has also experienced Africa on safari and on a five day canoe trip down the Zambezi in Zimbabwe with wildlife painter Linda Besse.
"I love the excitement of the wilderness, the unknown . To be able to witness your subject in the wild, and then return to the studio to capture the spirit and essence of that animal, so others can enjoy - that is the challenge."
