Susan Fox grew up in Humboldt County, California and always loved to draw, her favorite subject being animals.

After working for fifteen years as a sign painter, graphic designer and illustrator, she started to paint full-time in oil in 1997, specializing in animals and the natural world. She has a BFA in Illustration from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and has studied with well-known wildlife and landscape artists such as John Seerey-Lester, John Banovich, Scott Christensen and the late Simon Combes.

Susan is a Signature Member of the Society of Animal Artists, a Fellow of The Explorers Club and a Juried Member of the American Academy of Equine Art.

Her work has been accepted into a variety of national and regional juried shows, including "Salon International" (Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art), "Art and the Animal" (Society of Animal Artists), "Art and the Animal Kingdom" (Bennington Center for the Arts), the American Academy of Equine Arts’ “Fall Exhibition”, "Wild Things" (California Art Club) and "The Art of Seeing" (Oakland Museum of California).

In 2013 she had a solo exhibition “My Mongolia” at the National Museum of Mongolia and in 2014 was part of a three-artist group exhibition at the Union of Mongolian Artists Gallery, both in Ulaanbaatar.

Fieldwork to see her subjects in their natural habitat is a critical part of her work. Susan consults with a number of biologists to ensure that her wildlife subjects are accurate in both appearance and behavior. She keeps a journal in which she records each trip to Mongolia in both words and drawings, some of which, along with her paintings, she shares on her website and blog at www.foxstudio.biz.

In the spring of 2005, she went on her first trip to Mongolia to participate in an Earthwatch Institute-supported research project run by the Denver Zoo at Ikh Nartiin Chuluu Nature Reserve. She has traveled there eleven times now. Mongolia has won her heart. She loves the land, the animals and the people. She has explored many areas of Mongolia over the years, having visited 14 of the 21 Aimags. Her destinations have included the Flaming Cliffs in the Gobi, where Roy Chapman Andrews' Central Asiatic Expeditions found the first fossil dinosaur eggs; all three locations where takhi/Przewalski's horse have been reintroduced, two of them in remote areas of western Mongolia; the eastern steppes which are home to large numbers of Mongolian gazelles; and three locations that are home to argali, the world’s largest mountain sheep: Ikh Nartiin Chuluu Nature Reserve, Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve and Baga Gazriin Chuluu Nature Reserve.

Susan lives on the north coast of California in a rural area near the ocean known as Dow’s Prairie with her husband, collie dog and three cats.
