Wildlife and other natural subjects in Ink, watercolor and acrylic

Art is my hobby, but it keeps me sane. By profession, I am an evolutionary geneticist. I am currently on the faculty at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, in the UK, having moved here in 2015 from Harvard University where I was in the evolutionary biology department.

My primary artistic interest is in using art to study and portray the beautiful details of the natural world. I keep my eyes open for subjects at home and while on the road and do a lot of sketching and photography. I am currently also getting into etching which is a fun an dynamic process.

I was born in Germany, and moved to the United States with my parents in 1981. We lived in Pennsylvania and Arizona before settling finally in Castle Rock, Colorado in 1985. I received a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1996. There I also worked part-time as a scientific illustrator, which is where I developed my love for pen and ink drawing and the detail-rich world of illustration, which has persisted in my art, even when I do whimsical illustrations. I worked for a time in a biology lab in San Diego where I also showed my work at local shows, won several awards, and was a member of a local art guild. I then moved to Madison, WI for five years to do my PhD work on the origin and domestication of maize. I then worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Germany before moving to Massachusetts and ultimately to Norwich (UK).

I have several drawings published on book covers and in journal articles, but am expanding my growing love of painting, especially in watercolor, and have recently started working in colored pencil and copper plate etching as well.
