D. D. Mason sculpts what she has studied and loved all of her life - animals. At Purdue University, she obtained a degree in Ethology (animal behavior). In the 80’s, she traveled the mid-west art show circuit with her scratchboard works; in the early 90’s, she discovered sculpture, and never looked back. In the late 90’s, she studied with some of the finest sculptors in the nation, including David Turner, Forest Hart, Walter Matia, Gerald Balciar, and Sandy Scott. In the autumn of 2000, she began producing work for casting in bronze. In the past two years, her work has been juried into some of the most prestigious shows in the country, including the National Sculpture Society’s “Annual Awards Exhibition“, the “Art of the Animal Kingdom” in Bennington, VT, and the Society of Animal Artists Annual “Art and the Animal” Exhibition and National Tour. She has also been included in the “NatureWorks” show in Tulsa, OK; :Sculpture in the South” in Summerville, SC, the “Sedona Sculpture Walk” in Sedona, AZ, “Sculpture in the Park” in Loveland, CO and many others. Recent honors include the 2003 American Veterinary Medical Association’s Award at the “International Exhibition on Animals in Art”, at Louisiana State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. The winning work, “Charlie and the Bug” was featured on the front cover of the AVMA’s Journal for the month of June. “Charlie and the Bug” also won the Leonard J. Meiselman Memorial Award for Realistic Sculpture Executed in an Academic Manner at the Society of Animal Artists’ 43rd Annual “Art and the Animal” Exhibition and National Tour.
