Jim is a full time artist and sculptor. He really lovescreating art only next to God and family. Since 1976, he has owned and operated his own studio and gallery in the heart of the Rocky Mountains and Yellowstone National Park; Mountain Valley Artistry.
James has been honored with several fine art awards. His sculptures are shipped worldwide! He has several international collectors. # 1 of his commissioned life- size elk monument bronze was recently shipped to a collector in Geneva, Switzerland. In addition, museums, including the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C, display his work. At the Smithsonian, James directed the mounting and installation of a new pronghorn antelope diorama, this diorama includes the life-size custom mounts of a complete family of pronghorns.
James and his wife Bernie collected the flora and fauna for the diorama near his home here in Wyoming. Thousands of people walk past this national exhibit everyday. The Pronghorn Society and the Wyoming Outfitters Assoc. commissioned this project. He grew up in California's Napa Valley and Marin County, his father James Marsico ran a winery, Cuvasan Wines, and worked as a master gun smith and engraver. "My dad was truly a great artist and a major influence on who I am today," He was an Air Force veteran of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam." The family traveled and moved often when I was very young. His grandfather, also named James, was a taxidermist and inventor, from Creekside Pa. Hunters were always bringing trophies to grandpa to mount, and young Jim "always had mounts to do for somebody" as well, he says.
"I especially love to work on custom projects now that include sculpting new forms in clay; sculpture is my true work love." James has sculpted mannikins which are now in wide spread use in the taxidermy industry. While in second grade, Jim took a mail-order taxidermy course along with a friend. That was the first spark to the fire of a lifetime love for art, sculpture and taxidermy. James has attended several art courses at Northwest College here in Powell Wyoming and numerous intensive sculpture workshops taught by master sculptors at schools such as the Loveland Colorado Academy of Fine Arts.
One thing Marsico took away from five years working at a large taxidermy studio in Alaska,1970-76, which employed several apprentices, including himself, was how to sculpt the "mannikins," or exacting animal forms, which support the tanned skins of the trophy to be mounted. This type of presice lifesize sculpture is very demanding.
The creation of an original piece of fine artwork is a personal and interactive process. It is important for you to understand the process and for me to understand what you are looking for. Though there is a process, there are no hard and fast rules. The free flow of ideas, facts and feelings are essential to the completion of a commission. One of the best ways to get to know my artwork and me is through this website.
