Artists For Conservation Flag Expeditions Flag

Kelly traveled to the Galapagos in late September of 2009 to spend 40 days studying, sketching and photographing the unique animals and plants of the Islands. Her objective was to bridge the gap between science and art through a purposeful expedition of field studies, photographs, and interviews with experts of the region.

Kelly had her first exhibition as a professional artist in 2001. The event marked the beginning of a fast rising career that has garnered both national and international recognition. She is a signature member of the Artists for Conservation (AFC), the Pastel Society of America, and the Society of Animal Artists, N.Y. In 2004 she was deemed an ‘Artist of Note’ by Wildlife Art magazine. In 2009 she received the prestigious AFC Flag Expedition Fellowship enabling her to travel to the Galapagos Islands for the purposes of artistic field research. She has also been awarded the AFC Medal of Excellence twice, once in 2010 and again in 2011. This award is given annually in recognition of extraordinary artwork.

Primarily painting in pastel, Kelly’s use of this medium is noteworthy, not only in the sense of achieving a personal style, but also from the perspective of a technique that pushes the material to a fullness more often associated with paint mediums such as oil. The directness of her approach is decisive, and demonstrates a confidence that only comes with mastering one’s medium coupled with an intimate knowledge of the chosen subject matter. Both attributes are testimony to a commitment to quality and authenticity that Kelly arrives at as a direct extension of her innate personality.

Kelly’s completed originals are painted in her private studio using reference gathered from travels to Kenya and India as well as repeated trips to the Galapagos Islands. Kelly’s art is tied deeply to communing with other species and in the countryside of her home in rural Ontario, Canada, Creation’s inspiration beckons daily.

Kelly’s work is shipped globally to private collections in Australia, Ecuador, Europe the U.S. and Canada. She exhibits in prestigious galleries and museums in Galapagos, Ecuador, USA and Canada.

"I regard my inspirations and talent as gifts from God and my art as a way of celebrating and sharing the beauty of Creation with others."

Support for Conservation:
We all must look for ways in which we can be good and responsible stewards of creation. Contributing to the preservation of the natural world can take many forms.
Creation is about relationship. The beauty of the kingdom of nature can speak to our very souls if we let it. My art is continually challenged, exercised and improved as I contemplate creation. For me art is not about imitating nature, rather it is about going beyond accurately recording details in order to inspire others to see and behold creation. The natural world is waiting for us with rich reward and joy as we observe, understand and care for it. All we have to do is take that first step toward a deeper relationship. One easy yet rewarding way to relate to nature is by putting up a bird feeder. This is a great step towards sharing the world with our wild neighbours. When we develop awareness and get to know something, when we develop kinship, then and only then do we begin to really care about what happens. This is where true change begins. This is the heart and soul of conservation!
