Leila Refahi was born on 1985 in Tehran. Her father was a calligrapher and her mother was a carpet weaver. She was nurtured in an atmosphere full of art. She was introduced to traditional Iranian art and also world's modern and contemporary art from her father’s library at home, and it was from then that she found her passion in painting. It was then that she was introduced with various artists such as Kamal al-Din Behzad and strong composition of his paintings, Van Gogh and his frenzy, Dali and Magritte and surreal atmosphere of his paintings, Rembrandt and the amazing lighting and a powerful space creation, Frida Kahlo and the magical realism. She was moved by all of them.
In 1999 Refahi started studying art at the Fine Art school and had carried on all the way to the university. She graduated with a Masters in Painting at the Art and Architecture University. The day to day social issues started to become more visible in her work. She finished Her dissertation with a title of "Social Realism in Iran’s Modern Art" in 2010. In the same year, she joined an underground and pioneering artist collective called "Kaf" in Tehran. In 2010-2015 when the political situation made it difficult for such activities, they organized a variety of events such as weekly film club, artist talks, lectures, meetings, concerts and other special happenings. In addition in 2011 and after her studies she was invited to teach at the Art and Architecture University of Tehran. Throughout her careers apart from holding 4 solo exhibitions, she participated in more than 30 group exhibitions and festivals in Iran, France, Canada and USA.
Critical attitude to society is always obvious in her works. During her studies of society, Refahi showed attention to the environmental issues. The destruction process of the environment of Iran and the silence against it, caused her to react to that, and after her first exhibition in this context in 2012, in which she criticized the urban environment, she began to put this issue as the main subject behind her works. She also worked with "Tooma" and "Jan e Zamin" conservation art groups.
Sidelong environmental criticism, she has arrived social and political issues in layers of her works. She has chosen painting as her media and according to her subject, she uses a variety of materials and technics. For her, painting has converted a multilateral text where themes, as elements, are put together and should be decoded. She shares this experience with viewers with placing them in this position, and forces them to think.
