Painting – Acrylic, Oil & Watercolour
Joyce Trygg was born in Antigonish and as a child she lived close to nature at Cross Roads, Country Harbour in Nova Scotia. She surrounded herself with every animal she could adopt and find a place for in her family's small home . These pets were her first "models". Joyce drew constantly throughout her childhood and art was one of her majors in high school. She later attended Douglas College where she drew, painted, sculpted and studied Art History. While she raised her family she continued to draw and paint animals as a hobby, especially studies of horses, dogs and cats.
Joyce and her husband now live on a horse farm in historic Fort Langley, B.C., Canada, surrounded by horses, cats and dogs, with occasional early morning visits by deer, coyotes, hawks, eagles and sometimes by a black bear.
When she moved to the farm in 1994 she began painting seriously, attended classes at The Federation of Canadian Artists and spent untold hours, days and weeks participating in workshops with well-known local and international artists.
In 2000, Joyce travelled to Montana; to the Beartooth School of Art; for a week-long workshop with Terry Isaac, the internationally acclaimed wildlife artist, who has since then become a good friend.
Joyce was hooked - this experience validated her personal inclination to focus on wildlife and domestic animals as her central theme.
Since then she has had several more opportunities to paint with and learn much from Terry and other acclaimed wildlife artists including John Seerey-Lester, Daniel Smith, John Banovich and Paco Young.
Joyce's painting continues to reflect her love and empathy for all domestic animals and her admiration for the magnificent wildlife she feels privileged to encounter.
Although animals are her primary subjects, Joyce also to paint some of the beautiful details encountered in everyday things in her life, hopefully capturing the familiar in new and unexpected ways.
In 2010 Joyce was honoured to be selected by the B.C. Wildlife Federation as the B.C. Wildlife Artist of the Year. Her selected painting - "Eyes of the Forest" - is of a wary fox peering over a log.
In 2014 she was one of twelve artists invited to represent Canada at the “FABRIANOinACQUARELLO 2014”, an international artistic convention dedicated to watercolour painting – and she has been invited back to participate in the “FABRIANOinACQUARELLO 2015”, where her new watercolour painting -"Polar Ice"- is of a polar bear splashing in icy water.
Joyce is a Signature Member of Artists for Conservation and also a Member of: The Federation of Canadian Artists, Women Artists of the West and Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour.
Works by Joyce Trygg have now been exhibited and sold in Canada, the USA and in Europe.
She is represented by Kube Gallery in Fort Langley, B.C., Canada.
Joyce has donated many paintings over the years in support of fund raising for the Canadian Cancer Society and for local conservation organizations.
