Wildlife/Roadside Elegance, Watercolor

I thoroughly enjoy watercolor painting. Over the years, I have been trying to find the commonality or link between all of my wildlife watercolor paintings. It seems to be roadside elegance. This is a very short way of saying, I am fascinated by the delicate nuances of lines, shapes, colors, textures and patterns found in nature, even the way a leaf bends and catches the light. The soft texture of fur, and the complexity of feather patterns can keep you captivated. The more you look at plants and animals closely, the more you discover, and you are fascinated and intrigued to continue. One plant or one animal offers a wealth of material to paint from. Several years ago I began to paint clumps of plants with an animal, because when I painted full backgrounds many elegant, delicate details were lost in the layering. My subjects are from hundreds of photos that I have taken on trips to many farms, gardens, and back roads around my home in central Pennsylvania. I generally combine many photographs into one composition. I am even lucky to live along the edge of the woods on two sides of my property, so I have a wealth of material to choose from. Hence, the compact phrase roadside elegance. My hope is that my paintings will also inspire others to take a closer look at these many beautiful lines, shapes, colors, textures, and patterns easily available to us everyday.

I am a retired high school art teacher. I loved my job as an art teacher. The students were wonderful. Now I am enjoying the time that I have to work on my own paintings and photography, as well as being able to visit exhibits, openings, galleries, and museums with other artist friends.

In 2010 I had the privilege of winning the Keystone Award for Pennsylvania Artists, and the Sylvan Grouse Award at the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society's 31st International Juried Exhibition held at the Crary Art Gallery in Warren, PA. This winning painting, entitled "A Pause in the Layers", can be seen on my artwork page.

In 2011 I had the privilege of winning several awards with this series of paintings (cornfields). In April I won an Honorable Mention at the Packwood House Museum (Lewisburg,PA) with the painting entitled Alien Invasion. With this same painting I won First Place in Transparent Painting at the Susquehanna Art Society Exhibition, and an Honorable Mention in the Pennsyavania Watercolor Society Members online exhibit. The painting entitled Wrong Side of the Fence was accepted into the 32nd Annual Pennsylvania Watercolor Exhibition held in West Chester PA. in October, 2011.

In 2012, the painting entitled "Living on the Edge" won first place in transparent media in the Susquehanna Art Society Exhibition, and this painting was also accepted into the 33rd Annual Pennsylvania Watercolor Exhibition held at the State Museum in Harrisburg, PA.
