Oil on canvasCarrie Cook

Oil painter here and Signature Member of Society of Animal Artists.
Iíve always painted (non-human) animals, but perhaps now with a greater sense of urgency. Iím also a member of Artists Against Extinction, and the disregard for species across the globe is alarming. Iím not anti-human (some of my best friends are human!), but attention must be paid.
I do try to get some type of individuality across. Unless itís a pet we know personally, animals are usually looked at in the aggregate. And yet surely it is as individuals that they see themselves.
At least 10% of profits from my sold paintings is donated to charities that fight for animal rights and/or fight the good fight to keep wildlife wild.
I've also been a lead computer graphics specialist in New York City, studied with Disney background painters in Los Angeles, and taught art to mildly interested middle schoolers in Colorado. My most recent ďreal jobĒ was as graphic design manager of the Dallas Zoo and the illustrator and graphic designer of the Dallas Childrenís Aquarium. While working with the zoo and aquarium, I struggled mightily with the captivity of other species. It has informed my current position on animal rights, as has being a long-time vegetarian. Though not for a zoo, I continue to work as a freelance graphic designer.
Iíve studied art at The University of Oklahoma, The New School in NYC, and Art Center and Associates in Art, both in California. Iím also a member of the Denver Student Arts League. Iíve exhibited artwork at the San Diego Museum of Natural History, The Wildlife Experience in Colorado, Grouse Mountain Resort and Wildlife Refuge in Vancouver, the Hiram Blauvelt Wildlife Museum in New Jersey, Arizonaís Sonoran Desert Museum, and Miami's Art Basel among others venues.
