Stephen AscoughStephen A Ascough   BSc, BA, AFC Stephen Ascough
pencil and coloured pencil

Stephen spent his earliest years in England, until a family move overseas to the steel city of Hamilton, Canada. Upon graduation from High School, he attended the University of Guelph, where he earned both B.Sc., and B.A. degrees, and found, in that city, a home which continues today.

His interest in nature art began with a challenge from a family member to draw an owl. He was a little surprised to discover that he seemed to have a natural talent. This led to further efforts, first owls, then other types of birds and animal subjects. Though he received no formal artistic training, he was fortunate that several individuals provided valuable input concerning colour theory, composition, media, and other technical issues. In time, a personal style developed, favouring the vignette approach, using pencil and coloured pencil media. Birds continue to remain a favoured subject, though his repertoire has expanded to include small animals, butterflies, branch and forest floor studies.

Stephen's goal is to create satisfying compositions which revolve around a particular subject. To this end, you will find him carefully studying twigs, branches, leaves, and so on, and researching various sources which expand upon the principal theme. The general outline, once transposed to paper, is then diligently worked through until completion, while allowing for occasional changes which favour a more desirable result. The entire drawing experience may take as little as two days, but is likely to spread over a week or more. When fully satisfied that the final stoke of the pencil has been made, then the work is dated and signed.

As with most artists, Stephen's creativity is not limited to his artwork alone. Of growing importance to him are areas which hold significance for environmental concerns. Designs have been prepared for two railway locomotives propelled by liquid hydrogen, along with a motorized fuel tender compatible with existing diesel locomotives. These designs, alone or in tandem, hold the promise of reducing railroad atmospheric pollution essentially to zero. These ideas are being brought to the attention of railway equipment manufacturers and to companies interested in liquid hydrogen technology. A longtime rail enthusiast, Stephen continues to seek opportunities which would transform the world railway industry in terms of its carbon footprint, opportunities which are likely transferable to other diesel or turbine applications, such as oceangoing vessels and trucks.

It is Stephen's continuing hope that these efforts, both artistic and technical, may ensure that the beautiful complexity of the earth will continue to be valued and enjoyed by all who are fortunate to live upon it.
