Manuel QuirosManuel Quiros
PhD, MSc, BSc Manuel Quiros
Wildlife under a very personal figurative techniquesManuel Quiros

Born in Málaga, Spain in 1962, he got his Master degree in Stirling, UK and PhD in Biology in Madrid. Since 1980, Manuel Quiros, has been involved in a number of areas related to the conservation of wildlife. He has worked and collaborated with numerous universities and national research centers as well as other international organisations. His work on the conservation of fish species in danger of extinction has attracted the attention of scientific publications and involvement in conferenses as well as with television programmes, the press and National Geographic magazine.

With no formal artistic education, his paintings reflect moments in the life of rhinos, elephants, pelicans, otters, horn-bills, and every single fauna which shows special features. His art includes work in full colour, black and white, on wood or linen. Manuel exhibits an approach to the study of his animal subjects from manypoints of view, exploiting his knowledge and experience as a scientist and naturalist.

Although he enjoyed his research work he has always been in contact with arts and photography but never with the final purpose of becaming a proffesional artist. " To understand wild life art I had to become a zoologist ". Certainly his scientific experience influences his art work giving him a particular point of view that combines wildlife passion, artistic sensibility and scientific knowledge.

Self-taught without any specific art education Manuels work is full of force, originality and freshness and it has been very well acepted by the painting collectors. His actual resume counts with five individual exhibitions in 4 years with more than 100 paintings already sold, some of them in large formats (over 2 meters -up 80 inches).

He uses some old Renaissances techniques like layers and transparencies that produce movement, and a magic air to his paintings. Manuel knows it is essential to observe the animals in their natural habitat and uses images that he has been collecting from years to produce his final artwork.

During the 90´s he spent over a year in South California taking notes and photos of marine birds. As a result of this work he will be soon in an itinerant exhibition in North Spain with 12 large paintings of marine birds, giving special attention at the effects of human impact on endangered species as albotrosses...

We conserve what we love, and love what we know

A recent traveling exhibition of paintings of marine birds has been of such interest that National Geographic magazine, has included his works in their Spanish edition.

Manuel is now working on paintings that express his concerns with the extinction of so much of our lora and fauna.

Support for Conservation:
At this time a new show in Asturias, north of Spain (more info in News) with large paintings of marine birds, giving special attention at the impact of human behavior on endangered species such as albotrosses, fregates, ...

Now he is working on the "extinction" as an artistic concept as a result of our life style fighting against Mother Nature ...

A recent colaboration with Fundación Migres (www.fundacionmigres.org) will produce a number of graphic works which will be shown very soon.
