I grew up in a small town in North Idaho, and went on to study for two years at the University of Idaho. I later moved to Oregon and continued my education at Oregon State University where I earned a degree in art and also a minor in fisheries and wildlife in 1993. During this time I worked almost exclusively for the US Forest Service in fisheries. After graduating, I worked for the Pacific Northwest Research Station in Oregon, and painted in my spare time. This job allowed me to see and experience parts of nature that I otherwise would never have seen.
In painting wildlife, I don't specialize in any one species. In fact, I find a certain fascination within every animal that I see, and therefore enjoy painting a variety of subjects. I work primarily in oils but also enjoy experimenting with other media. For me, oils have a rich, sensual quality and allow me to work and re-work areas when necessary. I consider my style representational, and strive to evoke a feeling of "presence" or "actuality" in my pieces. In particular, I want the viewer to feel as though he/she can become part of the painting. I currently paint from my rural studio in Blodgett, Oregon where I am surrounded by acres of open space. I am represented by Old Main Gallery in Bozeman, Montana and my work can also be found in Shining Mountain Gallery in Pray, Montana. l have been accepted into numerous juried shows, been commissioned to do several pieces of art, and have won several awards. I feel so excited to have the ability to express my love of wildlife through art, and hope my work can bring a greater appreciation for nature and the animals within.
