Professional hunter, photographer Self trained sculptor since 1996, I am happy to present together with my sculpture work, a new line of experiments that have been idle for a few years. As a Hunter I was guided by the wonderful advice of an old French guide who told me one day : look for any "misspelling" in the landscape and you will see animals. Blessed by a good eyesight I was so happy to make this advice my rule of thumb. This technique I also applied to a much smaller world, who has his own mistakes. I am happy to reveal (sometimes with a twist of technology) those misspelling which can show strength, rhythm, geometrical ordinances or plain beauty.
Sculpture : The following text pleases me because, in a few words, the writer managed to grasp the essential traits of my approach to nature: "His years as a professional hunter, gave him visions which are translated for you in his powerful bronzes. Light vibrates over the metal; life is here, strong, full of truth and real adventures."
Hello to you nature art lover!
As a professional hunter, I have devoted a big slice of my life to the observation of the animal in the wild. As a client of mine used to say "one hunts more by sitting on your bottom than using your feet". With my feet I have trodden almost all the big mountains of central Asia looking for awesome sheep and goats or big stags. I also spent a good deal of time in Africa under burning sun or in more gentle landscapes in Europe or Argentina; but always here and there I have been looking again and again through my binoculars. Without me knowing that I would use it later in sculpture, these long hours of observation were the beginning of my present career. I filled the tank to the brim with thousand of "snapshots" that come back randomly to memory and provide the inspiration for my work. Now hiking books and rifles are kept in a closet, and I lead a new life devoted to a very demanding "mistress": SCULPTURE
I live with my second wife (a very gifted nature painter) in a cosy country corner in Belgium, surrounded by pictures and memorabilia of my past life, mainly African things, and my finished sculptures, if they are not "on show" somewhere!
In my studio I keep the original plasters or waxes of past work as well as a few new things on which I work in turns, because I need to change of subject every now and then. That is my way to keep a fresh eye.
Recently my work has been directed towards new lines; I cast in stainless steel. The flow of the light on the models in this material has to be uninterrupted which is difficult to achieve because there is no possible "cheating" through patina: it flows well or not! I like this challenge and soon there will be pictures of those new pieces on this site.
My work is realistic and I always try to conceptualize the wild and the strength, even the violence which is the essential criteria of nature. Hope you enjoy it.
