Michael DiGiorgio is a nationally recognized artist whose painting style reflects his keen observations in the field. Mike's painting and drawings have appeared in a variety of nature books and journals, including The Breeding Bird Atlas of Connecticut, Master's Guide to Birding, Audubon Field Guide to Birds (Eastern and Western Regions), Audubon Magazine, and Audubon Nature Yearbook. He has also painted covers for Bird Watcher's Digest and has been featured in Sanctuary Magazine, a Massachusetts Audubon publication.
Having painted birds since the age of 5, Mike began to study bird painting from the late Don Eckelberry in 1979. Under Don's critical eye, Mike developed his painting style emphasizing the character of the bird as well as its relationship to the environment. Working outdoors has provided him with knowledge of natural light, atmosphere, and design.
Committed to painting from life, Mike has traveled extensively to create field sketches of bird, plants, and habitat from the West Indies, Trinidad, and the Outer Islands of Britain. In addition, his numerous trips to the western United States and national parks have allowed Mike to record a full range of American birdlife.
He has had the opportunity to combine his travels with teaching by lecturing and giving art workshops aboard the Explorer expedition ship and The American Orient Express train. Mike also helps lead eagle watching guided boat trips for Connecticut Audubon Society. He has taught nature painting and wildlife art courses for the Graduate Liberal Studies program at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., since 1993. He also teaches watercolor workshops for the Central Park Conservancy in New York City.
Mike's paintings have been exhibited at the Bennington Center for the Arts, Bennington, Vt.; Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Wausau, Wis.; Dietel Gallery, Troy N.Y., Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia' Pa.; Northeast Wildlife Art Exposition in Albany, N.Y.; the Northeast Birds in Art Show in Cambridge, Mass.; Birdscapes Art Show sponsored by the Museum of the Hudson Highlands in Cornwall, N.Y.; Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Queens, N.Y.; the Zullo Gallery in Medfield Mass.; Old Lyme Arts Academy in Old Lyme, Conn.; and the Wesleyan University Art Gallery and Pegasus Gallery in Middletown, Conn.
In October 2004, Mike won the first ever an endowment award from the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia for recognition of his Bird Illustration work. This award was given in memory of Don Eckelberry.
Mike is currently illustrating plates for a new guide to Brazil with Robert Ridgley and Guy Tudor.
