STEPHEN J. KRASEMANN - 2012

The need for creative expression has always been on Stephen’s life agenda. With encouragement from fellow artists and friends, Stephen travels the life-long journey of an artist. Not only is he a painter but he has also written music and worked as a professional photographer.

After more than a decade traveling the globe searching for wildlife with the illustrations division of the National Geographic Society, Stephen has parked his easel between the Yukon Territory Mountains and the Lake Superior forests with the moose and bear, where he creates oil paintings from firsthand experiences.

Stephen’s hallmark style combines realism with suggestion from an impressionistic approach. "If I wanted to paint every blade of grass and each hair on an animal, I would be taking photographs and calling them art; the camera takes too much out of the creative equation.”

He always thought the process of putting paint to board is magical and this thought permeates his painting. "Imagine being part of a brotherhood that began with cave painting and continues today, where the paints and brushes have remained the same over the centuries."

Since 2001, when Stephen switched to easel painting full time, Stephen’s work has shown from the Greenwich Workshop Gallery in Connecticut to the Whistle Pik Gallery in Texas to the Artique Ltd. Gallery in Alaska. For the past eight years his paintings have shown at the annual Miniature Show hosted by Collector’s Covey in Dallas, Texas, and at the annual Gala Show hosted by The Anchorage Museum of History and Art, Alaska.

During this time Stephen has had four One-Man Shows, taught oil painting for three years at Confederation College in Thunder Bay and spent two years as Artist-In-Residence at Quetico Provincial Park--a canoeing wilderness in Ontario, Canada.

He has been an instructor for plein air workshops in Kluane National Park, Yukon and in Quetico Provincial Park and Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, Ontario, along with teaching workshops on animal painting at the Grand Marais Art Colony in Minnesota.

In addition, his work has been selected for Paint The Parks Juried Exhibit, he has received a People’s Choice Award at the Ely Greenstone Juried Art Exhibit and he was an Illustrator for several wildlife COMDA Calendars.

Stephen is a member of the Grand Marais Art Colony and the Artists For Conservation.
