MALAYSIAN RHINOCEROS HORNBILL
Dimensions (inches): 19 x 30 Medium: Acrylic on Illustration Board Description: Who among us has never been charmed by the hopping gait of English Sparrows on the ground? It's an endearing style of progression common among songbirds that takes on a completely different aspect when executed by a bird of real substance. A hopping raven is impressive, but when one of the really big Old World hornbills skips down the length of a branch, it is done with a goofy majesty absent outside of that order. My simple point here was to illustrate that mien as faithfully as possible in a male Rhinoceros Hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) hopping along a limb with a fig, possibly to present it to a mate walled up inside her nesting hole. I had originally envisioned the subject in dim light, shaded by the dense Sunda forest favored by this species. Once I had worked out this Yin/Yang-like composition, I decided a simple treatment, with a brightly-lit forest behind would be more powerful. Incidental creatures in the painting include a Slender Squirrel (Sundasciurus tenuis), a small flock of Oriental White-eyes (Zosterops palpebrosus), a long-horned beetle (Batocera sp.) and a Common Mormon Swallowtail (Papilio polytes).
