Subject: Wildlife Dimensions (inches): 6 x 13 x 5 Medium: Steatite Description: Selecting a stone provides the opportunity to take advantage of the color and grain within the material. I can wet the stone before I begin carving and see how I should develop the sculpture. In 'Avian Lullaby,' I wanted to sculpt a Sparrow Hawk mother with two of her young nestled up against the side of her breast. The grain was perfect in this stone because it has the appearance of feathers, so I sculpted the stone to follow the grain within the piece.
