The Fallen Mask - Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly by Lorna Hamilton
  The Fallen Mask  (2015)
Subject: Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly
Dimensions (inches): 30 x 26
Medium: oil on linen
Description: Never before in history have we been so pressurized to fit into a mould which society creates for us. Each day we are bombarded with messages, deliberate and subliminal suggesting who we should be, what we should look like and what we should achieve. Instead of creating positivity and fulfilment, it leaves us with an overwhelming sense of failure and negativity. The fact is, we are all individual. Of course we all know this but the desire to be accepted and fit in seems to override any sense of rationale.

We often put on a mask disguising who we really are, what we really think, covering hurts and scars that we think people may consider unsightly. Similar to the line in the song, Eleanor Rigby, made famous by the Beetles in 1966, she 'waits by the window, wearing the face she keeps in a jar by the door'. The song speaks a bleak message of isolation, depression and desolation. But the face kept in the jar hides the reality of a life gripped by great sorrow.

It is not much different today but it need not be that way. The Fallen Mask speaks of hope and freedom. Its about letting the mask fall and being your true self whatever that looks like. The thing is, no one in this world has gone through life without pain, sorrow , disappointments but we are too afraid to show it. Maybe if we did, each of us would be more courageous to be our true selves.
