Description: I first began working on this series of crane sculptures in 1987, when I was asked to participate in a fundraising effort by the Boulder County Hospice. While researching a suitable subject for a healing sculpture, I encountered the 'marsh gods', so called by the aboriginal Ainu. These cranes have recorded life spans of over eighty years, and are a symbol of longevity. Japanese cranes are monogamous and feature prominently on wedding kimonos, quilts, many forms of artwork and in folksongs and dances.

Among the many legends I found, one stood out. There is a legend that if you can fold a thousand paper cranes, your dreams will come true, your illness healed. There was a young girl, living near Hiroshima, who was afflicted with radiation sickness after the bombing. She had been told this legend by her uncle, and began folding paper cranes, believing if she folded enough, she would be able to survive. Her family began helping her, and her friends, and many other people who heard of this, they began helping, but she did die. Now what you have to remember in primitive cultures when this legend was born, a thousand was probably equal to infinity, meaning you have to keep folding. You have to continue to do the detailed work that is required to make dreams come true. Today there is a bronze sculpture in Japan honoring this legend, which is often covered with folded paper cranes. I called my first sculpture of these birds 'A Thousand Paper Cranes'.

The sense of quiet peace inherent in these birds generated a smaller sculpture named 'Serenity'. When Vanessa and I decided to marry in 1990, I remembered these legends, and used one of my original drawings of a pair of cranes on our wedding invitations. 'Mirror Image', and 'Partners' are derived from that drawing.
