WILD CHAMELEONS OF MANHATTAN - Panther Chameleons by Carel Brest van Kempen
  WILD CHAMELEONS OF MANHATTAN  (2013)
Subject: Panther Chameleons
Dimensions (inches): 20 x 30
Medium: acrylic
Description: Chameleons are celebrated for their color-changing skills, which, rather than aiding camouflage, as in this whimsical painting, help the animals thermoregulate (the skin turns dark to help warm the lizard, or light to allow it to cool), and to send various visual signals to other members of their species, such as sexual receptivity, aggression, etc. Of these two functions, my guess is that quick and effective thermoregulation was the original driving adaptation, which conferred a benefit to slow-moving arboreal reptiles whose ability to move from one microclimate to another was severely restricted.
