Smoky the Bear
(2010)
Subject: Black bear and forest fires
Dimensions (centimeters): 91.44 x 91.44 x 7
Medium: Collage, Chinese ink prints from a sockeye, smoke, plaster castings from bear tracks, oil paint on panel
Description: The pine beetle infestation is destroying the pine tree forests throughout the interior of British Columbia. As a result, extreme forest fire conditions are not uncommon during hot dry summers. The over population of beetles is a direct result of climate change, because it does not get cold enough to kill them over the winter. The loss of habitat damages the ecosystem around the salmon rivers, as well as displacing the bears, who now frequent urban areas.
