Remnant and Renewal - Rock wall and Killdeer by C. Frederick Lawrenson
  Remnant and Renewal  (2009)
Subject: Rock wall and Killdeer
Dimensions (inches): 23 x 32
Medium: Acrylic on Masonite
Description: The northeastern region of the U. S. used to be cut up with many of these old stone walls. The farmers that first cleared these hills had to laboriously pick rocks out of the soil as they plowed to prepare for planting. These early settlers would pile the rocks up along the edges of their fields creating the first visible boundaries. In recent years these old walls have been raided by builders looking for stone for projects such as fireplaces, chimneys, patios, and facades. This old wall is a remnant of the previous winter hanging on, yet the promise of renewal in the killdeer, one of the first birds to return in the spring.
