Subject: Northern brown kiwi Dimensions (inches): 5 x 6 x 4 Medium: Bronze Description: In February of 06 the National Zoo saw its first hatching of a Kiwi chick since 1975. The Zoo named him Manaia meaning 'guardian of the earth and sky'. Manaia is a North Island brown Kiwi. Kiwi are unique in the bird world in that their nostrils are at the end of their long beaks. Being nocturnal, they use their keen sense of smell to locate their food. I was honored to visit him when he was only days old.
