The Hanging Tree
(2017)
Subject: Kingfisher Dimensions (inches): 11 x 16 Medium: Oil on board Description: I use to live and walk daily near the Niagara River which eventually goes over the Niagara Falls in Niagara Falls,N.Y. The river provides good fishing and by a small bridge that fishermen use is a dead tree that kept their misguided casts hanging permanently as souvenirs. Kingfishers hunt the banks and occasionally use this dead tree as a perch to survey the fast moving river for their next meal. The Kingfishers are extremely shy when walkers approach and usually don't sit still enough to photograph or do a quick sketch. I tried to capture the two together in this painting in the evening's fading light. This painting was in the 2017 Artists for Conservation exhibit.
