Winter Visitors
(2015)
Subject: Trumpeter Swans Dimensions (inches): 16 x 20 Medium: oil on board Description: The Niagara River which separates Canada and the US is a winter refuge for all types of waterfowl. They usually stick around until early spring and then head north. The river (which eventually leads to the famous falls at Niagara Falls and eventually to Lake Ontario) has attracted more Trumpeter Swans in the last couple of years. They find comfort in using the river shore ice that lines its bank as a resting area and safety zone before their migration begins northward. I have observed them through the years and was always intrigued by the whiteness of the swans and the contrast of the river. Winter Visitors was my attempt at catching the current of the river versus the their smooth white reflection that result from the pockets of shore ice jamming into each other.
