Subject: Brown Pelican Dimensions (inches): 15 x 31 Medium: Oil Description: Between the Breakers was juried into 2011 Art of the Animal Kingdom at the Bennington Center for the Arts in Bennington, Vermont. I was on my annual trek to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Florida when I took a break for a couple of mornings to walk along Cocoa Beach as the sun was rising. The inspiration for this painting occurred as I observed the shore birds in the surf and was struck by the effect of the Brown Pelicans flying between the breaking waves and the impact of the birds and waves backlit by the morning light.
