RED-BREASTED PARADISE KINGFISHER
(2010)
Dimensions (inches): 10 x 8
Medium: acrylic
Description: The paradise kingfishers (Tanysiptera spp.) comprise six species of small, forest kingfishers found on New Guinea and a few nearby islands. One species, the Buff-breast Paradise Kingfisher (T. sylvia) extends south into Australia's Cape York Peninsula. They are a uniform lot, the adults all bearing long streamer tails and red bills and feet. Unlike most kingfishers, these birds are not closely associated with water, and feed on insects and small vertebrates that they locate from hunting perches. The Red-breasted Paradise Kingfisher (T. nympha) has two disjunct populations, one in Northeastern New Guinea, and the other in the Vogelkop region of the island's far northwest. Little is known of its habits, but, like others of its genus, it probably excavates its nest-hole in active termite nests.
