The Welcome Light
(2005)
Subject: Young Girl & Lantern Dimensions (inches): 10 x 8 Medium: Oil Description: In spite of the countless visits to Lang Pioneer Village made over the years, and the many drawings and paintings that resulted, I found myself experiencing the village as if for the first time. The occasion was one in which the historical site was open at night and illuminated solely by lantern and candle light. I was both delighted and surprised by the transformation of such a familiar place, as if I might have experienced a form of time-travel. The Welcome Light is likely the first in what I suspect will further expressions within this theme. Certainly the charm of this ten year old girl and the warm interior light has a wealth of appeal in and of itself, but this was heightened for me by memories of my own childhood. I recall visiting an elderly friend of my father's who would set out a lantern for us when he expected our arrival after dark. This habit was still a common practice by farm-folk in those days and was referred to as setting out the 'welcome light'.
