Echo of a Song
(2005)
Subject: Wood Thrush Dimensions (inches): 10 x 22 Medium: Oil Description: The thrush family of birds is well recognized the world over for the virtuosity of song exhibited by so many of its members. The wood thrush is among these, and in Algonquin it is second only to the hermit thrush for its richness and purity of musical attributes. Preferences for deep forest and thickets, and their subtle colouration often makes these birds difficult to see, but the clear sweet songs they produce in the stillness of the woods surely makes up for this. In many respects the secretive ways of the wood thrush among the diffused light and shadow simply adds to the effect of their vocalizations, with musical phrases seemingly to swell out of nowhere in strong deliberate fashion and float disembodied through the forest.
I am struck not only by the sound itself, but also the odd echo of a song upon its completion, one that I am not certain is real or a continued resonance only in my mind and memory. In this painting I have attempted to introduce not only the wood thrush itself but something of the subtle mystery that is part of their surroundings and song, and my experiences of them.
