Ancestral Equus
(2004)
Subject: Przewalsky Horse Dimensions (inches): 8 x 12.25 Medium: Oil Description: On the cave walls at Altimira and Lasceaux there are depictions of an early race of horse, painted by Paleolithic man some 20,000 years ago. The Przewalsky horse is a last surviving remnant of that early race and is now found only in captivity. In painting Ancestral Equus I chose to show it as it now exists, a lone species cut off from its past and without a true home anywhere on the planet. The bit of cut hay that it feeds on reveals its captive state, and I hoped that by reducing the background to a void of sorts it might suggest the animal's uncertain place in a world far removed from that which gave it birth.
