Wintering South
(2004)
Subject: American Avocet
Dimensions (inches): 17.75 x 9.75
Medium: Oil
Description: Often there develops in my mind concepts that build slowly from vague half-formed notions. These things can sit there barely noticed for days, or months, or even years, until some chance observation brings them to the fore in a flash. This wintering avocet was just the thing to resurrect an idea I had from nearly a decade ago. In its unformed state I imagined a single figure or object bathed in a soft light in an environment so minimally defined that one might think it a dream or vision (and in a way it is exactly that). Further, this as yet undetermined object would be simple in colour, a solid made from the ephemeral substance of its environment, light, shadow, and air. Its form would best describe a simple grace, something that might have features suggesting a delicate, perhaps even fragile nature.
