Idyl Drift
(2004)
Subject: Mallard (female) Dimensions (inches): 5.8 x 5.8 Medium: Oil Description: This female mallard drifting lazily along on a warm summer's day echoed our own attitude of relaxation on a nearby grassy bank. It occured to me that we and the mallard were perfect subjects for an 'idyl' (a short poem depicting simple scenes of pastoral life), and it was this thought that caused me to include the term in the painting's title. As I worked I found that developing the dimensional aspects of the piece was critically important to its success. A great many manipulations of colour, tone, and adjustments to edges came into play and proved to be an extremely delicate exercise in spite of the scene's seemingly simple elements.
