Study of Lidth's Jay
(1992)
Dimensions (inches): 11 x 14 Medium: Watercolour & Graphite Description: During the late '80s and early '90s I developed a body of work depicting rare, threatened, endangered, and extinct bird species of the world for the Suntory Corporation in Japan. Often, the only reliable source of reference was in the form of museum study skins. In the case of the Lidth's Jay, the specimen was also very rare and not allowed outside of the museum. The measured drawings and colour notes had to be carried out in the museum's lab, and with enough information that it could be referred to later in the studio while creating a final painting. Of course the study skin provides no information on life-like postures. This must be created from the artist's familiarity with similar species and a feel for what looks natural and convincing.
